{Movie Review} - Forrest Gump

From director Robert Zemeckis comes the reissue in theaters of “Forrest Gump.” Celebrating its 20th anniversary, this movie was re-released in theaters on September 5, 2014. Originally made in 1994, the movie follows protagonist Forrest Gump (Tom Hanks) telling his life story to strangers who wait with him at a bus stop. His life description includes being bullied in the 1950s, teaching the young Elvis Presley a hip-swing dance, enlisting in the U.S army to fight a war in Vietnam, and meeting several presidents, such as John F. Kennedy and Richard Nixon. In other strange twists and turns, he exposes the Watergate Scandal, starts a shrimping business, and eventually invests in a “fruit company” (known today as Apple), making him a millionaire.

There is much more to Gump’s life than can be imagined. Forrest Gump is an appreciable and ambitious character, having a below-average IQ. Kenneth Turan, a Times Film Critic, explained: “Forrest's story offers a bemused chance to view the most turbulent decades of recent American history through a particularly harebrained lens.”

Rotten Tomatoes rated this movie as seventy-two percent, with critics saying that the movie is “an overly sentimental film with a somewhat problematic message, but its sweetness and charm are occasionally enough to approximate true depth and grace.”

After watching the movie for myself, I found it to be quite enjoyable. It had funny characters, an interesting plot, and a sentimental ending. I highly recommend this movie to others if they want something out of the ordinary.

This review was written originally from my journalism class. I thought for my first review of something that I ought to put on here, for the world to see. Hoped you enjoyed!
